Fonseka is widely credited for leading the military to victory in its 25-year war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), also known as the Tamil Tigers.
It comes nearly a month after the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Velupillai Prabhakaran and most of his deputies were killed by government forces.
Sri Lanka launched an all-out offensive against Tamil Tigers after pulling out of the truce and last month declared that it had eliminated the leadership of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
