The new technique, known as Light Detection and Ranging, uses harmless laser energy shone from aircraft to see through trees and reveal settlements, fortifications and farms that may have lain undiscovered for centuries.
Imagery obtained through light detection and ranging (LIDAR), a technology similar to radar, is used in line-of-sight and urban warfare planning.
The base is also using technology, including aerial photography and the use of Light Detection and Ranging, or LiDAR - radar-like aerial equipment that bounces light off a target and analyzes the light that is reflected back.
