The United States Department of Agriculture and the California Department of Food and Agriculture are working diligently to control the current onslaught of invasive pests in this state which threaten our health, crops, native plant species and waterways, like the citrus psyllid, zebra and quagga mussels, West Nile virus, oriental fruit fly and light brown apple moth. The spraying was aimed at the light brown apple moth, an invasive species from Australia that has infested 12 counties stretching from north of San Francisco to Los Angeles. Sightings of the light brown apple moth _ which can ruin everything from tomatoes to citrus fruit to alfalfa _ have shot up into the thousands since the insect was first discovered in the San Francisco Bay area three months ago, agriculture officials said Friday. |
