Stumbling to the living room, I grope for my glasses and a thick, leather-bound book to begin my day with the appropriate morning prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. Our daily schedule also includes praying together the Liturgy of the Hours at morning and evening prayer, the chaplet of mercy, the rosary, and attendance at Mass in our local parish. The illiterate peasantry of medieval Europe couldn't pray the psalms themselves, of course, and the parish morning and evening prayer of the ancient church had largely ceased, eventually to be replaced by prayers like the Angelus, prayed at times that mimicked the monastic liturgy of the hours. |
