It began thrilling visitors on May 17, 1924 and its 500 feet of twisting track and wooden construction survived the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The idea of a mutual-aid network for water and wastewater utilities emerged in the San Francisco Bay Area after that region suffered two devastating disasters, the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 1991 Oakland Hills wildfire. Following the Bay Area's Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 that killed 43 people, the California Department of Transportation had identified 2,200 state bridges and overpasses that needed to be retrofitted. |
