If these ideas come to fruition, Lower Manhattan--in fact, the whole Lower West Side of the island--will become a more integral part of Manhattan.
Four general regions were identified: 1) western Pacific Ocean, for material taken in Japanese and Russian waters; 2) Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, for material from the eastern Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands to Unimak Pass; 3) Gulf of Alaska, from Unimak Pass to the Alaska-British Columbia border; and 4) the Lower West Coast, from Canada, Washington, Oregon, and California.
The proposed location for the recycling station—the Lower West Side of Manhattan, on the six-acre Gansevoort Peninsula south of 14th Street—is smack in the middle of one of the fastest-growing areas of the city.
