Since the lowest free energy state for magnesium is magnesium oxide, the magnesium arid magnesium sulfide are constantly looking to react with something from which it can obtain oxygen. Even though the magnesium sulfide (MgS) has a lower density than the molten iron, it does not readily float to the surface because small particles take longer to float than larger particles. A well-known problem for ductile iron producers, this interaction draws away the magnesium that should be forming nodules and leaves magnesium sulfide inclusions at the surface of the casting. |
