The Defense and Homeland Security Departments would like the ability to detect a man-portable air defense system missile within a five-kilometer perimeter before it is launched. The Department of Homeland Security is conducting a research project to see if aircraft could be flown above airports to protect jets from what is referred to as MANPADS, Man-Portable Air Defense Systems. The two countries agreed that man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) in the hands of criminals or terrorists pose a serious potential threat to commercial aviation and military aircraft around the world. |
