Ever since NASA lost contact with the Mars Polar Lander in late 1999, minutes before it was to have parachuted onto the Red Planet, astronomers have been looking for the craft's remains. Cynics might observe that NASA's Mishap Investigation Board has had plenty of experience tardily catching critical details after hundreds of millions have been spent--on the myopically mis-designed Hubble Space Telescope, the ill-fated Mars Polar Lander, and the orbital money pit called the International Space Station. Three months later, the Mars Polar Lander was destroyed when its engines shut down 132 feet before it reached the planet's surface. |
