In 1994, a $71 million federal eradication plan began after the discovery of the crop-destroying Mediterranean fruit fly. Entomologists also used the technique to clear California citrus groves of the invasive Mediterranean fruit fly and to eradicate a livestock parasite, the New World screw-worm fly, from North and Central America. SIT has been successful in controlling the Mediterranean fruit fly, the melon fly and in the eradication of the New World Screwworm. |
