By putting the bacteria in a microbial fuel cell under anaerobic conditions--that is, with no oxygen present--researchers "are stealing some of the energy and harvesting it as electricity," says Lovley. Now some researchers are eyeing organic wastes from homes, food processing, and other sources as an energy feedstock--bacteria including Rhodoferax and Geobacter are being harnessed in devices called microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to break down organic waste products, converting the energy of their chemical bonds into electricity and hydrogen. From a Reuters on-line report datelined London on a new robot that runs on meat: "Dubbed Chew Chew the `gastrobot,' a twelve-wheeled, train-like robot runs on a microbial fuel cell, which breaks down food with bacteria and converts it into electrical energy, according to a report in New Scientist magazine. |
