In the 1960s, workers were exposed to up to a radiation dose of 12 millisieverts per year compared with around one millisievert per year now.
Either level means a person who stays in the room for only a day and a half is exposed to radiation far exceeding 1 milliSievert per year, a safety limit set by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).
A CT examination with an effective dose of 10 millisieverts (abbreviated mSv; 1 mSv = 1 mGy in the case of x rays.
