NASA studies favored liquid-oxygen/methane propulsion for the new spacecraft because it eliminates the need for special ground-handling procedures associated with traditional -- and dangerous -- nitrogen tetroxide and monomethyl hydrazine propulsion systems. Aboard the Mars Observer, two sets of check valves allowed high-pressure helium gas to rush through, pushing out from their respective tanks the desired amount of either the oxidizer nitrogen tetroxide (NTO) or the fuel monomethyl hydrazine (MMH). The new engine provided the heavy lifting with its 445 Newtons (100 pounds) of thrust, using the standard satellite bipropellants, monomethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide. |
