I just wanted to add a note that the largest and most active organization combating mountaintop removal in the western part of West Virginia, in coalition with Kentucky and Ohio activists, is the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition. Coal had done well under President Clinton-it was his administration that began to soften the mountaintop removal regulations, and his MSHA that had been lax in checking up on the Big Branch Impoundment wall. On top of all that, Lewis and its surrounding counties face environmental problems caused by a coal-mining method known as mountaintop removal, in which mining companies use heavy machinery to shave off the peak of a mountain until they reach the level where coal deposits lay. |
