MTV, or Murr Television, was shut down by a court ruling in September 2002 on the grounds it had violated a law on election broadcasts in Lebanon, where local media outlets can only survive through political patronage.
The television stations given licences are Future TV, partly owned by Hariri; National Broadcasting Network (NBN), a station that Birri is reportedly setting up; Murr Television (MTV), run by the brother of Deputy Prime Minister Michel al-Murr; and the country's most popular private station, Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI), formerly owned by the now-disbanded Lebanese Forces militia, but now controlled by a group of prominent Christian investors.
