The basic framework of an N-heterocyclic carbene is a five-membered ring made of two nitrogen and three carbon atoms.
They made a series of seven new compounds, called caffeine-based gold (I) N-heterocyclic carbenes, in the laboratory and studied them.
Among the topics are enantioselective annulations with chiral N-mesityl N-heterocyclic carbenes, the construction of anti-Me-OH vicinal relationships in polyketides, asymmetric catalysis in the total synthesis of lipids and polyketides, hetercycle construction via asymmetric rhodium-catalyzed cylcoadditions, and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformations involving carbon-carbon bond cleavage.
The original discovery was made by accident two years ago while studying the bonding properties of rhodium complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs).
Rhodium complexes of N-heterocyclic carbenes form macroscopic crystals that are able to bind to gases like oxygen and carbon monoxide without changing their internal structure or oxidation state.
