The NACOP and its sister organization, the American Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens, has for two years sent families of slain officers a message of consolation that includes a tape of Boone's songs. Through the 41 years that NACOP has maintained officer death statistics 6,529 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty -- an average of 159 officers per year. The survey, the ninth annual poll conducted by NACOP, received 1,860 responses, more than 10 percent of the 18,100 police chiefs and county sheriffs mailed the 32-item questionnaire. |
