The North East, along with London and Manchester, was chosen to advise on the national framework because of its high standing among those involved in the prevention of fraud, with the NEFF supported by 200 businesses and acting as a model for nine other UK initiatives.

Board member Andrew Robinson said: "The NEFF has built up a track record in the region in the fight against fraud for the last four years while the NFSA is new, so it must be the case that if NFSA in London provides some funding for the NEFF here it will give better results because we have tools and bigger awareness in the fight against cyber crime.
NFSA official Daniel Hurl, who spoke at the NEFF Credit Crunch Seminar in Newcastle yesterday, agreed that it would be "vital" for the authority to work closely with regional organisations like the NEFF in the future.
The NEFF - launched with a conference at St James's Park, Newcastle, in March last year - united police, universities, accountants and professionals in a fight against financial corruption.
More than 200 organisations have joined NEFF, and 1,000 delegates have attended a series of fraud master classes in the region.
