NICICO ceased exporting concentrates in 1983 and since then all concentrates (32% contained copper) have been treated at the metallurgical complex.
Some of these are being refitted with Cummins engines but, in addition, NICICO has ordered 20 new Dresser 445E 120 s ton Haulpak [R] trucks and these are now being assembled on site.
Talks have been held between NICICO and Finland's Outokumpu on the joint development of this mine.
In the longer term NICICO is evaluating a large copper porphyry close to the Soviet border in Northwestern Iran.
NICICO also operates a small underground mine near Birjand, more than 500 km from Sar Cheshmeh in Khorasan.
