NIWE is the only dedicated support group for people with eating disorders in the North East.
NIWE receives funding from the Newcastle and North Tyneside Primary Care Trusts but it was thrown into a cash crisis last year after South Tyneside PCT switched the pounds 6,000 it used to give the charity to pay for an eating disorders practitioner.
Services offered by NIWE, a voluntary agency, are a valuable alternative to those services offered by the local NHS.
NIWE currently receives a total of pounds 20,130 in funding from both Newcastle and North Tyneside Primary Care Trusts, as well as pounds 5,000 from Newcastle Social Services, with the rest coming from charitable organisations.
But this year NIWE has found itself pounds 10,000 short after the South Tyneside Primary Care Trust decided to invest the pounds 6,000 it allocated the group in employing its own eating disorders' practitioner.
This has left NIWE ( which last year helped 333 people with eating disorders ( scrabbling to make-up the larger-than-normal shortfall.

I have heard so many women say that NIWE has been their last resort and that they don't know what they would have done if they hadn't discovered the group.
As far as I am concerned, NIWE is a resource that is vital as there are thousands of people who can't use the NHS services because they don't fall into the narrow criteria.
