But according to the NPWF, the increase in complaints of pregnancy discrimination has far outpaced the increase in women in the workforce since the laws enactment.
The October 4, 2000, NPWF newsletter reports that some eighteen states are now developing proposals for paid family leave benefits and that five states--California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Hampshire, and New York--have recently passed legislation requiring the formulation of alternative program models and funding sources for final consideration.
The NPWF also says a study conducted by the bipartisan Family Leave Commission found that nearly two thirds of employees who needed but did not take family or medical leave cited lost wages as a reason.
