Brian Doyle wins the 2005 NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature, a $25,000 prize given biannually to an accomplished contemporary writer of children's literature. A self-proclaimed "state without territory," NSK initially borrowed many of its shock stratagems from Laibach, starting with its name: In the early '80s, merely using German (which no NSK member actually speaks) was a provocation in a country founded on the mythology of Yugoslav resistance to the Nazi invasion. Mildred Taylor received the first ever NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature. |
