Despite accusing Islamabad of not doing enough to stem the resurgence of al-Qaeda and the Taliban, Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai--whose administration is virtually nonexistent outside the capital of Kabul--opposed a September 2006 agreement between the government of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and NWFP tribal chiefs which called for a pull-out of federal troops from N. Jamiat-e-Ulemae Pakistan and the Jamaat-e-Islami embarked on a nationwide campaign protesting the attack, and a minister of the NWFP state government resigned, as did their members of the National Assembly. Not only is the rest of the country run on a secular basis, but the NWFP borders politically unstable Afghanistan. |
