But behind the scenes, in conversation with the British collective's leader, Robert del Naja (also known as 3D), angry feelings surface about the state of the world, particularly the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Najeen defined themselves as "an artistic and literary group of Iraqi professional artists and art students in Baghdad that survived the past and the war" (hence the name najeen, survivors, from the root naja, to survive). Underwood earned a full scholarship to a summer intensive at Naja City Ballet in Okinawa when she was 12, followed by scholarships to summer programs at the School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. |
