It took hundreds of thousands of dollars in last-minute ads from a panicked National Republican Senatorial Committee for Burns to eke out a 14,000-vote win over the formerly unknown mint farmer from Whitefish. The National Republican Congressional Committee reported more than 400,000 new donors by year's end, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee raised more hard money in an off-election year than at any other comparable point in its history. Bainwol, who recently opened his own consulting firm, was briefly the chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and before that the executive director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which raises money to get Senate Republicans elected. |
