Naval Headquarters (Base Organisation Darwin) had originally been established in Darwin in 1935, at 56 Mitchell Street, about 1 kilometre from the wharves, and was commissioned as HMAS Melville on i August 1940. we are told; naval headquarters now located in Britain will move to Italy, and an air-force wing might move to Turkey. The building is a few hundred yards from President Chandrika Kumaratunga's office, the naval headquarters and other government buildings. |
