Influenced by Stockdale and the course in moral philosophy Larson had introduced as president at the Naval War College (1977-79) at Annapolis, Larson instituted a character-development program, oversaw Sherman's hiring, and established a civilian-led Center for the Study of Professional Military Ethics.
As president of the Naval War College from 1977 to 1979, Stockdale convinced a technically oriented service of the importance of studying the humanities.
As a professor of strategy at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, the author has written extensively on the subject of US war plans.
