As a demonstration of this technique an exoplanet that was previously hidden in the glare of the light of the host star spilling past the coronagraph, was recently revealed in an 1998 Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) image.
[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Using the Hubble Space Telescope's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer, Swain and his colleagues recorded infrared spectra from the planet, which periodically crosses in front of its parent star as seen from Earth.
The use of non-invasive near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used in the research field for several years, and has recently begun to see a wider application in the clinical arena.
