The first generation of newly industrializing economies preceded Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia in this pattern of accelerated urbanization by about a decade, but the pattern is substantially the same. Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan are alternatively known as the Newly Industrializing Economies (NIEs), the Dragons, or the East Asian Tigers. Like many newly industrializing economies, women fill this role. |
