These workshops integrated the visual arts and writing and brought the issue of identity as explored through literature like Frank's Diary of a Young Girl, Lowry's Number the Stars and Williams' A Gathering of Heroes to a more immediate level. As the centerpiece of my introduction to World War II, I highlight the story of a Danish family that smuggles Jewish friends fleeing the Nazis into Sweden in the Newbery-winning novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry (Houghton Mifflin, 1989). |
