Although some research indicates that 50 percent of the cases of FTT seen in hospital settings is of organic origin, more common findings indicate the total number of OFTT cases diagnosed in infants and children is around 20 percent to 25 percent (Bithoney & Rathbun, 1983; Oats, 1988; Schmitt, 1988; Zenel, 1997).
Gastroesophageal reflux, chronic disease, genetic disorders, pulmonary and cardiac problems, and abnormalities in the gastrointestinal system are a few of the medical problems that may cause OFTT (Mitchell, Logan, Pollock, & Jamieson, 1995; Zenel, 1997).
