Sales of organic and fair trade products make up only a tiny percentage of overall sales--the Organic Trade Association reports that Americans spent nearly $750 million on nonfood organic items in 2005, and nearly $180 million in fair trade sales in 2002, according to IFAT, a global network of fair trade organizations--but we can continue to demand more ethically made products. The consumer base is growing for organic products," said Holly Givens, communications director for the Organic Trade Association, which projects the overall organic market will grow 11 percent annually between 2007 and 2010. |
