These results indicate that after PM exposure, the impairment of endothelium-dependent dilation in the systemic microcirculation coincides with PMNL adhesion, MPO deposition, and local oxidative stress. Therefore, in diabetes, alcoholism, or chronic renal disease, both impaired phagocytic activity of alveolar macrophages and impaired recruitment of PMNL into the lungs as a result of acquired dysfunction of alveolar macrophages may be critical, in addition to impaired PMNL function, in determining the predisposition to melioidosis pneumonia. Acute exposure to PM accelerates the transit of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) from bone marrow, whereas chronic exposure increases the size of the bone marrow PMNL pool (van Eeden and Hogg 2002). |
