The federal government's recently concluded Data Assessment and Verification (DAVE) project, which focused on this question, found areas (specifically ADLs) that are typically undercoded, with a potential loss of reimbursement of up to $30 per patient day for Medicare and $1 per patient day for Medicaid.
2) Another study showed a relationship between full-time-equivalent (FTE) RNs per patient day and urinary tract infections, pneumonia, thrombosis and pulmonary compromise after major surgery.
Researchers examined data from 268 medical-surgical and step-down units in 68 hospitals, and found mean total RN hours of care per patient day increased by 20.
