Southern Illinois University Carbondale was recently awarded a $487,000 grant from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) and the Illinois PERC to conduct groundbreaking research on file development of a clean-burning, propane-powered irrigation engine.
The new propane engine will reduce emission levels to meet the 2008 Tier 3 emission requirements, according to Mark Leitman, PERC Agricultural Programs Manager.
The patent-pending PERC system can also be easily adapted to unscrewing operations on the parting line, which are quite difficult to accomplish with conventional hydraulic-drive systems, Petrucci says.
