In a study of 16 SIV isolates from 5 different primate lineages, 12 were capable of infecting human monocyte-derived macrophages, and 11 were capable of replicating in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (7), although cell tropism does not necessarily predict virus pathogenicity.
To better understand the risk benzene poses, we examined the effect of benzene exposure on peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) gene expression in a population of shoe-factory workers with well-characterized occupational exposures using microarrays and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
The group initially studied natural killing of HSV-infected cells, but quickly focused their efforts on identifying a specific type of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) that possessed the innate ability to generate IFN-[alpha] in response to viral infection.
