An echocardiogram obtained at 4 hours of life revealed a structurally normal heart, with evidence of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, tricuspid regurgitation, a large patent ductus arteriosus with a right-to-left shunt, and aortic isthmus narrowing, without coarctation. Eric was born with severe Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), a life-threatening disorder in which the newborneIUs arteries to the lungs remain constricted after delivery, limiting the amount of blood flow to the lungs and therefore the amount of oxygen into the bloodstream. Hypoxic respiratory failure may be caused by several disorders, including Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), also known as persistent fetal circulation. |
