During 2001-2002, the number of generic lineages of wild poliovirus circulating in India remained the same for wild poliovirus type 1 (P1) (three major lineages) and wild poliovirus type 3 (P3) (four major lineages).
Of these 1,556 cases, 1,445 (93%) were wild poliovirus type 1 (P1), 108 (7%) were wild poliovirus type 3 (P3), and three (<1%) were mixtures of P1 and P3.
The outbreak was caused primarily by wild poliovirus type 3 (P3), although wild poliovirus type 1 (P1) also was isolated.
Of 265 virus-confirmed cases in India in 2000, 138 (52%) were poliovirus type 1 (P1), 126 (48%) were poliovirus type 3 (P3), and one case was a mixture of P1 and P3 (Figure 1).
During 1999-2000, 1423 isolates were wild poliovirus type 1 (989 in 1999 and 434 in 2000); 11 were wild poliovirus type 2 (11 in 1999 [from India] and zero in 2000); 1127 were wild poliovirus type 3 (894 in 1999 and 233 in 2000), and 23 were wild poliovirus types 1 and 3 mixed isolates (16 in 1999 and seven in 2000) (Table 1).
Of the 561 confirmed cases, 328 had wild poliovirus isolated from stool specimens; 265 were poliovirus type 1 (P1) and 63 were poliovirus type 3 (P3).
During February-November 1998, wild poliovirus type 1 was isolated in 24 cases and wild poliovirus type 3 in two cases in eight eastern and southeastern provinces of Turkey.
Of 1138 wild polioviruses isolated in India in 1999, 730 (64%) were poliovirus type 3 and 397 (35%) were poliovirus type 1.
