Pleas from politicians were interspersed with invitations to subscribe to The Atlantic Monthly, Current History, the Wilson Quarterly, Financial Times, Forbes, and a magazine he had never heard of entitled Political Science Quarterly, published by the Academy of Political Science (APS). A 1993 article from the Political Science Quarterly, this essay uses Civil War veterans' benefits as a case study to reveal the flaws in other explanations of American welfare state development and to highlight the strength of a polity-centered approach. More than half of the articles published in the Political Science Quarterly in five sample years in the early twentieth century dealt directly with current problems and events. |
