Once oil is found, one of the waste products of the pumping process is so-called produced water, which often contains heavy metals, low-level radioactivity, traces of drilling fluid additives and polyaromatic hydrocarbons.
The 12-year study backs up previous research showing that incense smoke contains cancer-causing chemicals such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyls and benzene, which cause mutations to DNA in human cells.
Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are carcinogens in the food supply, but as food items not implicated in the aetiology of colorectal cancer may actually be greater contributors to the total dietary intake of these compounds than red meat, they do not provide a plausible basis for implicating red meat in carcinogenesis.
