Biopolymer producers don't divulge their production volumes, but the stated plant capacities for the two most widely used biomaterials--starch-based Mater-Bi from Novamont in Italy and polylactic acid (PLA) from NatureWorks--far exceed those numbers. Along with polymers based on polylactic acid made from corn and other material, through these activities Fujitsu will promote further expansion of the use of plant-based materials in its products. A group of recycling organizations is calling for NatureWorks to halt expansion of its bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) in beverage bottles until the bioresin's recyclability has been demonstrated. |
