These novel therapeutics gain entry to the blood as a consequence of binding to the Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor (pIgR), a cell surface protein expressed by gut and lung epithelial cells. The novel composition consists of a ligand that targets a receptor found on the surface of specific cells (such as the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) found on airway cells) and any non-protein therapeutic. To target airway cells, a novel binding fragment has been developed that binds to the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR) located on airway epithelial cells. |
