The movement gathered pace following a 1974 report by the Pontifical Biblical Commission finding "no Scriptural objections to ordaining women to the priesthood. The Bible," as the Pontifical Biblical Commission wrote in The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, "in effect, does not present itself as a direct revelation of timeless truths but as the written testimony to a series of interventions in which God reveals himself in human history. And some evangelical Protestant groups in the United States have severely critiqued several statements, including the recent Pontifical Biblical Commission document dealing with the Jews and their Scriptures in the New Testament and the statement A Sacred Obligation released in September 2002 by the ecumenical Christian Scholars Group on Christian-Jewish Relations. |
