This short-wave moved across Lower Michigan during the afternoon hours contributing to large scale ascent via differential positive vorticity advection in the 500-300 mb layer (not shown). Thus, Kocin and Uccellini (2004a,b) demonstrate that 10-inch snowfalls occur in portions of the Megalopolitan region under virtually any synoptic pattern that provides a strong surface cyclone, an 850 mb onshore jet, upper air support via positive vorticity advection at 500 mb, and a sufficiently deep subfreezing layer adjacent to the surface. For the few cases where this scenario included an approaching closed low aloft, strong quasi-geostrophic forcing associated with differential positive vorticity advection was present. |
