Prakash, a Jesuit priest, spoke about the growing oppression of ethnic minorities in Gujarat over the past decade, largely due to the actions of the Sangh Parivar, an extremist affiliate of the right-wing Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, from which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged. Agencies that investigated the violence said the main responsibility lay with the Sangh Parivar, a coalition of Hindu nationalist groups that includes the Bharatiya Janata Party and its umbrella organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Liberals, on the other hand, condemn AHAD's affiliations with both the million-dollar advocacy outfit Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America, which has ties to India's ruling BJP party, and the nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, whose mission includes "strengthening the [Hindu] society by emphasizing and inculcating a spirit of unity, so that no one can dare challenge it. |
