But today Reporters Without Borders ranks Syria as "one of the worst offenders against Internet freedom.
The fifth annual Reporters Without Borders Worldwide Press Freedom Index was issued October 24, 2006, ranking the level of freedom enjoyed by the press in 168 nations.
In its annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index, the news media advocacy organization Reporters Without Borders rated the United States 53rd out of 168 countries in allowing press freedom, down from 17th when its reporting began five years ago.
