In a lab dish, a cocktail of mannose, cAMP, and the macrophage protein induced extensive axon growth in rat retinal ganglion cells, Benowitz says. According to the findings in this poster, oral dosing of SRT501, Sirtris' proprietary formulation of resveratrol, reduced the loss of retinal ganglion cells and preserved axonal function in a pre-clinical model of optic neuritis. Many retinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), are accompanied by damage to the retinal ganglion cells, a hallmark of many ophthalmic diseases, disrupting the transmission of signals from the optic nerve to the brain, resulting in loss of sight. |
