The Edinburgh International Festival offers three weeks of diverse dance programming--from Balanchine to the Brazilian street dancing of Grupo de Rua de Niteroi (left). In 1999, after hyperinflation wiped out the savings of millions of Argentines and devastated its middle class, a badly divided nation, faced with the prospect of outright anarchy, elected Marxist Fernando de la Rua as president. Emotionally and physically handicapped, Rua observes the problems of Dogside from a self-absorbed distance: the girl Kid, whose guardian aunts neglect her; Mama, who drinks to cope with the deceptions of her husband, Piiky Chiefy; and the villagers' seeming inability to build a new, modem wharekai (communal dining hall). |
