The DBE is one of the participating countries in the SACMEQ
III Project in S outh Africa: A Study of The Conditions of Schooling and the Quality of Education.
(Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality) assessments of 2000/01 and 2007 tested mathematics and reading of 6th graders in the countries of South and East Africa.
DBE is meeting with SACMEQ
on the 22nd September 2016 in a bid to conclude processes relating to the release of the results.
(Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality) report which was published in 2004 after conducting extensive research on the quality of education offered in Namibia, clearly states "in reading, both Namibian learners and teachers scored below the SACMEQ
means" (p: 29).
The Committee heard that across all SACMEQ
countries, there was a notable improvement in the overall reading and mathematics scores of learners.
Learner performance regionally and internationally, participation in assessments such as TIMSS, PIRLS and SACMEQ
, and equity are amongst the challenges that we still face in basic education.
