In 2002, SAGARPA, Mexico's equivalent of USDA, had a budget of $3. On the other hand, swine influenza is not considered within the SAGARPA priorities, and no surveillance program exists for swine farms, although we found serologic evidence that in Yucatan influenza H3 subtype is highly prevalent (14). Steps are now in place at the Mexico City headquarters of the Animal Health Division of SAGARPA to implement appropriate laboratory diagnosis for flaviviruses and alphaviruses. |
